Hey all you people! As you may have seen as you were stalking me on other social networking sites, I've been playing around with Ping.fm! Now, you may ask, what is Ping.fm? Well, it takes the idea of social networking and simplifies it, since we all know you have those bajillion networking sites like Twitter, blogs, FriendFeed, etc. Let's get to the tutorial, eh?
FIRST (shocking, I know), go to, oddly enough, Ping.fm (link in the title). If you don't already have an account (and you may not), go ahead and create one. Easy enough, right? Well, then log on in and you'll be greeted at your "dashboard". If you're not at your dashboard for some reason, click the dashboard tab in the upper left. By default...you don't have any networks added. Yet. Click the "Add More Networks" link, and you'll be greeted by a long list of compatible sites. For ease of use, we'll add Twitter. It's the first link in the first column, so click "add network."
Just input your Twitter information (you do have Twitter, right? Right? Good.), and you're all set! Ping.fm won't steal your information, so you're good. Now, you WANT to keep the checkboxes checked (except for location, if you're paranoid). That will ensure that Twitter gets the posts that it supports, micro-blogging (which it's for) and status updates (which everyone uses it for).
Now, back to the dashboard. See that input field next to where we added the network? Type whatever you want to put on Twitter there and click "Ping it!". In a few moments (ok, like a minute max usually), it will be added to Twitter! Woo!
Now, if you have a mobile phone, and preferably unlimited texting, there's an even easier way to update! Under the input field, click "SMS / Text Messaging". Input your phone number (plus area code, sans hyphens), and it will give you a number (add to contacts for ease of use, it's in my phone as "Ping.fm" oddly enough) that you can text your updates to! This isn't very good for say, a blog, but a micro-blog/status update fit very well!
Now, there's a lot more that I could show you, but that covers the basics of what you need to know. Now go and add your networking sites, and have a blast!
Until next time,
